Waipahu, HI, Nov. 20, 2017 – American Julia Boserup rallied for most of 3 hours Monday to overcome Sara Errani, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-3, in the opening round of the Hawaii Open, the only American stop on the WTA’s 125K series.

The tournament, presented by The Hawaii Tourism Authority, runs through Sunday at Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park tennis courts.

Boserup, a 26-year-old Californian, lost the last three points to fall in the opening set to Errani, who has been ranked as high as No. 5 in the world in singles and owns a career Grand Slam in doubles. Errani won 51 points and Boserup 47 in the set, which lasted 68 minutes.

Boserup, one of 12 Americans in the draw, battled back. She won the first three games of the second set. Errani rallied to tie it at 4, but Boserup won the final two games to force a decisive third set.

That set was tied 3-all when rain forced a short delay. Boserup came back out to win the final three games for one of the most memorable victories of her career.

What made her happiest after the match, which lasted 2 hours and 51 minutes? “I’m playing another match,” Boserup laughed.

In an earlier match, Ajla Tomljanovic upset fourth-seeded Kurumi Nara, 6-2, 6-2. Tomljanovic, a a 24-year old Croatian, is back to No. 136 in the world rankings after a shoulder injury last year. Her hitting partner this week is boyfriend Nick Kyrgios, No. 21 in the men’s rankings.

Qualifier Su Jeong Jang from China advanced to the second round with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Na-Lae Han.

The doubles draw opens Monday night, with the final scheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m. The singles final is at 2 p.m. Sunday. Six seeded players are in Tuesday’s final first-round matches.
