The first day of play kicked off with local hometown Wild Cards Phuc Huynh and Andre Ilagan playing singles matches against the Harrison brothers. The crowd was energized, cheering on their hometown heroes and expressing excitement over the return of pro tennis to Hawaii. The Puig McHale match took an exciting turn as McHale came back to defeat Puig in the third set tiebreak. The Bouchard Vangeweghe match provided an exciting second set with high intensity from both players, resulting in a tiebreak that had our crowd on the edge of their seats.
Great tennis was played all around in the quarterfinals of the 2018 Hawaii Open. There will be more exciting matches to come when Kei Nishikori, Milos Raonic, Elise Mertens, and Garbiñe Muguruza compete tomorrow. Tickets are still available for day two and three matches, as well as our special charity match for volcano relief Saturday night.
