Waipahu, HI, Nov. 19, 2017 – A familiar face is the top seed at this year’s Hawaii Open, which begins Monday. The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) tennis tournament is presented by the Hawaii Tourism Authority.
Shuai Zhang of China, who fell to American Cici Bellis in last year’s final, is the top seed this year at the Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park tennis courts. Zhang, who also reached the Australian Open quarterfinals last year, is ranked 36th in the world and plays American Taysia Rogers in the first round.
Sara Errani faces American Julia Boserup in Monday’s third match on CORP’s center court. Errani, from Italy, was French Open runner-up in 2012 and ranked No. 5 in the world the following year. The 30-year old has been No. 1 in doubles, winning a career doubles grand slam with Roberta Vinci. Errani has collected more than $13 million and 35 titles in her career.
The Hawaii Open is one of eight WTA 125K events, and the only one in the the U.S. Bellis won the inaugural title and was named WTA Newcomer of the Year in October. An injury forced her to withdraw this year.
Tennis Channel will televise each day of the Hawaii Open. The doubles final is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, with the singles championship at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Hawaii Pacific University senior Lena Lutzeier lost to Na-Lae Han, 6-0, 6-4, in Sunday’s qualifying. Lutzeier, from Germany, earned the qualifying berth by winning the UTR Honolulu Open earlier this month.
California teenager Claire Liu, this year’s Wimbledon junior champ, won her qualifying match 6-0, 6-3, over fellow American Megan McCray. Liu, who turned 17 in May, is No. 266 in the world rankings. She is the first American junior to win at Wimbledon since Chanda Rubin in 1992.
